CHENNAI: A special court for CBI cases in Chennai on Thursday sentenced IRS officer R Sekar, and
Anwar Hussain, proprietor of Classic Tours & Travels, to four years rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case. A total fine of Rs 6.10 lakh was also imposed on them, an official statement said.
The CBI registered the case against Sekar, who was then a protector of emigrants in Chennai, his wife and Shri Anwar Hussain (a private person) on the allegations of possessing disproportionate assets.
It was alleged that during the period from January 2007 to July 20, 2009, Sekar and his wife entered into a conspiracy among themselves to acquire ill-gotten wealth to the tune of Rs 2.08 crore approximately, which were disproportionate to their known sources of income.
The CBI alleged that the acquisition and possession of these assets by Sekar and his wife was abetted by Anwar Hussain, a travel agent. It was also alleged that Sekar had appointed Anwar Hussain Travel Agent as conduit for collection of bribes in the form of speed money for issuing Emigration clearance.
After investigations, CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused for possessing assets to the tune of Rs 2.08 crore which was 471.05% disproportionate to the known sources of income.
The trial court found both the accused guilty and convicted them. The court has acquitted the wife of the public servant.
